The economic incentives for keeping incarcerated people enslaved are very high, and they come from more than one direction. Corporations like 3M, the conglomerate behind brands like Sharpie and Post-it, quietly sell millions of dollars of machinery and raw materials to prisons for incarcerated people to use in manufacturing goods. In fact, 3M even helps prisons build and operate license plate factories. This is James' story.
