While those benefiting from prison labor are most often government agencies, there's no doubt that many corporations have their hand in the cookie jar. Private corporations that use prison labor — either within prison walls or through work release programs — get low-wage workers with no labor rights or protections. But why would prison administrators let corporations use their free labor force? Because the state can then garnish their wages. Everyone wins but those doing the work.
